WSUS Server (Windows Server update services)
Follow the configuration steps first.
- Setup a group policy
- Tools
- Click on group policy management
- Expand you forest , domain and click on your server
- Now open active directory users and computers
- Create a new OU for WSUS (CTP-workstations).
- Move all the computers you want to be implement updates and hotfixes via WSUS.
- Now go to group policy management select the OU name (CTP-workstations) if not shown than click on refresh.
- Right click on OU (CTP-workstations) select option, Create a GPO in this domain, and Link it here.
- Specify the name (WSUS GPO) and click ok.
- Now right click on newly created GPO named (WSUS GPO) and edit (Group Policy Management editor will open).
- Under computer configuration, expand policies, expand administrative Templates, expand windows components and select windows update.
- Select configure automatic updates and double click on it and select enable.
- Select a setting in the drop down menu as you like good your environment (option 3 is recommended) select scheduling as you like and apply.
- Now select specify intranet Microsoft update service location click enable and you have to mention your WSUS URL example http://ctp-dc1.ctp.com:8530 in both fields.
- Go to your client machine
- Login as domain administration
- Open command prompt as a admin
- Type a command gpupdate /force and manually restart.
- Go back to you WSUS server
- Open WSUS console select you server example ctp-dc1.
- Click on computers, expand all computers, click unassigned computer,
- Select Any and refresh, now you will see your client computers
- Check synchronization status via clicking on Server example ctp-dc1.
- Wait till synchronization status to 100%.
- Now for updates, expand all updates, click on approval see is there any client. If no.
- Go back to back your client machine login with domain admin account
- Open command prompt as a administrator type wuauclt /detectnow enter.
- Enter second command wuauclt /reportnow.
- Now go back to your WSUS server, in WSUS console, go to computers, all computers, unsigned computer click refresh , see the installed status started if yes it good.
- Finally click on the server in WSUS console you will see number of computers or computer increase in computers needing updates counter.
- To push updates click on updates, all updates in approval select unapproved and status failed or needed than click refresh.
- Select update from the list right click on it and approve and in next window click approve for install and click ok to push it on your environment.
- For verification go to your client machine, control panel click on windows updates, it will start updating to your approved update.
